Record of anthocyanins research
Total 2100 papers on anthocyanins have been published, which is the double vs average in the previous 10 years.
The areas of investigation included diabetes, cardiovascular & neurodegenerative diseases, many studies among seniors showing memory improvement in high anthocyanins diet groups. Some of the research further examined the cancer-inhibitory properties (breast, prostate, lung cancer).
The anthocyanins in the diet become so important, that USDA approved purple tomato to be grown in USA last year. The tomato was developed by a team of scientists, including (those of you from UK would be proud of) British biochemist Cathie Martin, who is a professor at the University of East Anglia and a project leader at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England. Cancer-prone mice that ate the purple tomatoes lived around 30% longer than those that ate normal tomatoes, according to their study.
And there is a good news, you do not have to wait for purple tomates 😉, one of the top anthocyanin-containing berries is the haskap berry. Available and worth introducing into daily diet.
