For over a decade, research has been conducted on the beneficial effects of the haskap berry on liver function.

The results of one such study showed that liver cells damaged by ethyl alcohol and treated with haskap berry extract regenerated by 20–55%, depending on the extract’s concentration. By stimulating their growth, liver function was restored. In human studies, administering haskap berry extract for 20 days also improved biochemical markers of liver function. It had both preventive and therapeutic effects in cases of liver diseases such as inflammation, cirrhosis, and steatosis.

Based on these results, a drug containing haskap berry extract to restore liver function and promote regeneration was patented in Korea in 2010. Recent studies of a liquid extract from the haskap berry have demonstrated a protective effect in cases of fatty liver disease. It may therefore serve as a basis for developing products to combat obesity. (Int J Mol Sci. 2023)
