Haskap berry - the power of anthocyanins
The shrub is native to the Northern Hemisphere where it occurs in nature in Japan & Siberia. The international name haskap comes from the Japanese “hasukappu”. The fruit was considered an “elixir of life” by the Ainu peoples living in the Far North due to its health-promoting properties.
Haskap begins vegetation very early, with flower buds appearing in March, and the fruit ripening in early June. The berries are oblong, blue with velvety skin, with a very rich sweet and sour flavor combining blueberry, blackberry, black currant, raspberry. This is a unique combination not found in other fruits. Harvesting takes only 2 weeks once a year.
The most valuable active compounds in the haskap berry are anthocyanins, it has 3-4 times more of them than, for example, blueberries. This red pigment is a very powerful antioxidant, anthocyanins have a much higher antioxidant potential than the most well-known reference antioxidants, such as vitamin E, β-carotene or vitamin C. Our orchard and products
We are a family business of haskap berry enthusiasts. Since 2014, we have been growing it organic in Kujawy. We use only natural fertilizers (crushed rocks, humic acids, concentrated plant extracts) in cultivation. In the fight against pests we are helped by beneficial microorganisms and buzzards that inhabit the plantation. We weed the plantation by hand, and mow the interrows. As a result, there are no pesticides or herbicides in our berries.
From the very beginning, we have cooperated with scientists from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and Wroclaw University of Life Sciences. We chose varieties with the highest content of anthocyanins and process them in such a way that there is as much of them as possible in the final product. Products under the family brand BIOHASKAP have received many awards: juice Best New Product BIOFACH 2019, concentrate powder Discovery of the Year 2020 Customer Laurel, jam with stevia Golden Innovation 2024. We have also started, after 4 years of preparation, the production of the first natural cosmetics with haskap berry.
