Haskap berry and colitis
Haskap berry is a rich source of anthocyanins with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Gut bacteria use them as substrates to produce bioactive metabolites. The anthocyanins themselves act as prebiotics, regulating the growth of gut microbiota and increasing the abundance of probiotic bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia, which are believed to be associated with anti-inflammatory effects.
In an interesting study conducted by Canadian researchers, a powdered extract of haskap anthocyanins was used. It was administered for 7 days to animals with acute colitis, either alone or in combination with probiotics, with or without microcapsules.
Supplementation with anthocyanin extract—interestingly, without capsules and in combination with probiotics—significantly reduced the severity of colitis, and this group achieved the best results among all seven groups. A diet containing them inhibited the rise of inflammatory markers (interleukin-6) in the blood. The presence of haskap anthocyanins and probiotics in the diet protected against colitis, likely by alleviating inflammation of the mucous membrane.
We are often asked why our BIOHASKAP Regeneration powder isn’t available in capsules and this study shows that consuming anthocyanin extract directly in powder form provides the best anti-inflammatory effects. (K. V. Surangi Dharmawansa, Foods 2024)
