A diet rich in the anthocyanins found in dark fruits and berries, particularly the haskap berry, can favorably promote glycemic control.

Haskap berry is a source of health-promoting phytochemicals that inhibit the digestion of carbohydrates in the gut. This is useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, as it reduces the rapid release of glucose into the blood by foods with a high glycaemic index. According to the research conducted by dr Anna Podsędek at the Technical University of Lodz, haskap berries showed one of the strongest inhibitory activity of all 30 fruits tested (e.g. blueberries, bilberries, blackcurrants). Delayed digestion of sugars is a therapeutic element for controlling postprandial hyperglycaemia in diabetic patients.

A 20-year US epidemiological study found a 1.5- to 2-fold reduction in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people consuming

22-24 mg of anthocyanins daily (Wedick 2012).

A number of studies in people with type 2 diabetes with high dietary anthocyanin content show a reduction in fasting glucose levels, a reduction in cellular resistance to insulin, and an improvement in HbA1C, an indicator that shows good diabetes control (Cao 2018).

Recent studies on animals with diabetes show that anthocyanins improve kidney function (Li 2022), and combination therapy of the primary drug for treating type 2 diabetes with anthocyanins showed a synergistic effect in lowering blood glucose levels (Tian 2022).
